Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Phoenix    Deputy County Attorney (Division of County Counsel).

Drafted and argued motions for summary judgment, motions to dismiss, motions for more definite statement, and motions to quash subpoenas in federal and state court concerning 42 U.S.C. § 1983 claims, ADA claims, as well as state law negligence claims. Conducted and responded to all forms of discovery, including depositions. Provided legal advice to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, Maricopa County Risk Management, Maricopa County Public Defenders Office, and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, as needed. Appeared regularly in state court on law and motion.

December 1998 to December 1999    

Quarles & Brady, Streich Lang, Phoenix  Criminal (White Collar) Litigation Associate.

Drafted and argued various motions and pleadings in federal, state, and municipal courts, concerning issues in white collar criminal law, criminal law, health care law, and general business litigation. Prepared and drafted discovery motions, motions to dismiss, motions to suppress, and motions to compel. Researched and drafted memoranda and opinion letters. Had significant client contact.

February 1998 to December 1998

U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, San Francisco, California  Staff Attorney.

Prepared legal memoranda analyzing criminal and civil law issues from federal and state cases appealed to the court. Recommended appropriate disposition of the cases, and presented the recommendations to a three judge panel on a monthly basis. Analyzed complex legal issues and expressed them clearly to the panel, both orally and in writing. Assisted the court with the disposition of cases decided without oral argument. Managed appeals.

May 1995 to January 1998

Maricopa County Public Defenders Office, Phoenix  Deputy Public Defender.

Handled all aspects of indigent criminal defense litigation practice, including bench and jury trials, pre-trial litigation, preliminary hearings, arraignments, and sentencing. Prepared cases for trial, drafted trial motions, and regularly appeared in state court on law and motion. Researched and drafted motions to suppress, motions to dismiss, motions to release, and discovery motions. Conducted and responded to all forms of discovery, including client and witness interviews. Was responsible for own case load, from arraignment to acquittal/sentencing.
